Most of us find ourselves commuting a couple hours a day in our vehicles. We listen to the sound system all the time we are on the road. Naturally most car owners would like the very best sound quality as possible Unfortunately most drivers stop short of ever replacing their own speakers because they aren’t sure how to proceed.

This is unforunatel for them since installing car speakers is not as difficult as one might think. If fearful, they’ll find most any car audio shop will install a set for a nominal fee. Installing aftermarket car speakers can make a world of difference in the quality of your drive. The biggest challenge is selecting the best speakers for your specific vehicle but you can find some great deals on car audio speakers on the internet.

The most important point to find is the correct size speakers. The safest way to ensure you purchase the correct size and is to remove the door panel and actually measure the width and depth of the stock speakers. This isn’t too difficult to do and since you will probably want to install your new speakers yourself, the door panel will have to be removed anyway. Be sure to measure the depth with the window lowered. Many times you will find newer replacement speakers will require a bit more depth then the stock speakers. Most of the larger speaker manufacturers have shallow mount speakers that will fit almost anywhere.

The next point to consider is the suggested power requirements of whatever speakers you are considering. The best way to compare car audio speakers is to compare the suggested power of the speakers. You will have to check your vehicle’s sound system to determine if there is an amplifier or if the speakers are just being powered by the source unit. Most OEM premium sound systems have an amplifier incorporated in their setup. You can easily check with the car manufacturer.

Most entry level speakers from the major manufacturers will perform perfectly even without amplification. But if you are going to invest in high quality car audio speakers, you should really invest in a power amplifier. No matter which way you decide to go, you will find that any aftermarket car audio speaker will out perform OEM installed speakers. You can find tons of car audio installation information on the web which can answer any questions you might have on installing speakers. Click through to this site for car audio installation videos that can help you along the way.

Technical Features of Radar Detectors :Do You Need Them All?

Radar Detectors: What Features Do You Need?

When you’ve decided to invest in a new radar detector, either for the daily commute or just day-to-day errands, buying a radar detector can seem a bit daunting. There’s a whole host of scientific breakthrough specs and technical industry jargon to weed through. Do you need a laser detector or a radar detector? What sort of bandwidth should you look for? Visual or audio alerts? Vg2 shielding mechanisms? Mounted or concealed? More than likely, you are just the average consumer, looking for an effective and reliable radar detecting unit to alert yourself to your own speed, as well as who and where you are being monitored for it.

After having done a lot of research on the subject for my own interests, I have broken down all the tech specs and necessary features here, to save you the trouble of both unearthing unnecessary consumer headache, as well as buying the wrong radar detector for your individual travels.

First off, there are basically three types of radar detectors as far as form is concerned: corded, cordless, and remote mount; each with its own set of pros vs. cons depending on your needs and lifestyle. The corded typically mounts to your windshield, and because of its location offers an aerial less-obstructed detection. Cordless is just that, and offers portable convenience. Lastly, the remote mount variety of radar detectors are mounted permanently to your vehicle, hidden from sight.

What is the difference in laser vs. radar detection? Though radar detection has long been the chosen method of both drivers and traffic patrol, laser radar detection technology has been adopted by the latter. Police patrol will use laser radar for more accurate detection of closer-range vehicles, and standard radar detection for longer distance detection. Though it is more expensive to find a detection unit with both, it lessens your chance of being ill-prepared on the road. Moreover, you should only buy a laser radar model with 360 degree laser detection; otherwise you will only have the unit detecting in one direction, not from every angle of the vehicle, as is needed.

City modes? They are basically, the blanket term for precise radar and laser detection in heavy radar frequency zones. The city mode will turn down the range of detection on your unit and perceive less interference or false alerts from external electrical mechanisms as well as other radar detectors in your immediate area. There’s much more of this technical buzz in the city…hence the term. So, if you live or drive in more metropolitan areas vs. rural ones, this would be a good choice for you.

VG2, Spectre, and Invisible shielding technology. The VG2 alert is the basic technology that allows you to know when the police in your vehicle’s vicinity are using radar detector detectors or VG2 systems, to discern whether you are using a radar detector or not. Police officials adopted the Spectre system for detecting radar detectors on a broader and more precise playing field, and so the Spectre alert on your new radar detector will let you know when it is in fact being used. This allows you time to shut off your own radar detector, when alerted. The Invisible technology you may want to look for in a higher-end radar detector will be virtually undetectable to the above mentioned police-controlled devices, so you will never have to worry about shutting it down. All of these mechanisms are fairly new and will add expense to your radar detector, but again, it depends on how effective and reliable you need the radar detector to be.

Bandwidths. Really, the only bandwidth you should have in your radar detector is the X bandwidth. Most frequencies operate on the X, and to incorporate any of the others (K, Ka, Ku), will just be asking for interference from unrelated mechanisms and external electrical stimuli. The result: less focus on what radar detection you should be picking up, such as police radar.

These are the basic necessary components in any reliable and accurate radar detector. You will find many more features available in these systems, but they are cosmetic in relation to the significant ones listed here. Start with these terms/tips for form and function, and then move on to whether you’d like luxury components such as voice alerts and enhanced LED displays.

What About Cobra Radar Detectors? Do Cobras Really Work Well?

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Cobra is considered as one of the top producers of radar detectors. One of their most popular products is the ESD 6060. This model is undetectable to police radar and will give you enough warning to get your foot off the accelerator, even at speeds of over 100 miles per hour. And this model is identified as the least sensitive in the market.

The Cobra ESD 6060 radar detector is cheaper than all other radar detectors. This can be bought for around 50 dollars in some stores.

The following are the features of Cobra ESD 6060:

It has a small size
Its price is low (25-50 dollars)
It is easy to use
It cannot distinguish K from Ka
It has an adequate performance, which may not be acceptable for ‘power’ users.

Many would say that if you have budget restrictions the Cobra ESD 6060 is an adequate radar detector.

Another Cobra product is the Cobra PRO 9/80 radar detector. This is the most featured-packed Cobra radar detector unit – it includes an aluminum carrying case, hardwire and a cigarette lighter splitter.

The Cobra PRO 9/80 provides voice alerts and 8 point digital compass – extras which make this model an improvement on previous Cobra models. This unit is set up with an alpha numeric display that allows for far more detailed detection and more complex signal strength indicators. This will also automatically mute the detector based on your speed.

A piece of advice: if you are planning to buy yourself a radar detector, choose the most expensive one that you can afford This will give you greater quality and higher performance. Do not mind the price; just think of the satisfaction and peace of mind it will give you.

Should You Opt For Cordless Radar Detectors

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

The demand for convenience has lead to an impressive market of cordless radar detectors. A cordless unit does not have to mean a less impressive gadget, as manufacturers continue to develop new technology that rids drivers of the hassle of cords while still giving them superb radar detection.

One of the most popular cordless radar detectors under $200 is the BEL Express Model 946. A clip-on, 90-degree deflector and earphone come standard on this model, which can deflect both incoming radar and laser beams. Further, the Express has proved exceptional in many tests; it is often the only detector tested that can reliably detect Ka band radar. It is equally proficient in detecting lasers. A drawback to this unit is its audio quality, which is less distinct than many might prefer.
For anyone interested in paying more than $200 on a cordless radar detector, the Escort Solo S2 is a good option. It has a low-profile compact case and features all but one of its controls on the front. As for radar detection, this style detects X, K, Ka, and laser bands, and announces their strength via a highly perceptible audio alert and flashing bar graph.
More and more companies are adding cordless models to their radar detector line-up. As this feature increases in popularity, the increase in models should create a competitive market, resulting in higher-quality cordless devices that continue to offer excellent radar and laser detection.

Just Get A Radar Detector- Stop Being Scared!

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I’m not the best liar in the world. This is very apparent whenever I get pulled over by the cops for speeding, which is nearly every day. I try my best to improvise on the spot and somehow sway the officer’s opinion, but invariably, John Law hits me with the maximum fine.

Last week for example, I was cruising at a respectable 200mph through a school zone, when I heard the inevitable sirens…the fuzz was after me! I argued passionately with the po-po, explaining how I had to rush my pregnant wife to the hospitaluntil he pointed out that I was the only one in the vehicle…

The day before, I was stuck in traffic. Not wanting to sit around like a chump, I drove over the divider and into the opposite lane where, to save time, I proceeded to drive in the wrong direction at 250mph (I drive a Bugatti Veyron). Needless to say, the bacon was soon hot on my tail and I was fined yet again.

I figured the time for action had come. There was no way I would change my lifestyle of speed and thrills; that would be too difficult and would require me to obey the law. But still, there had to be a way for me to legally dodge the coppers… Then suddenly the answer hit mea radar detector!

I researched several online and learned much about this helpful device, the friend to speed demons and the bane of federales. Many radar detectors on the market today offer state of the art features including laser shifting and voice alerts. Others eliminate radio frequency emissions which allow the unit to be undetectable to other radar detectors.

I ordered one for a reasonable price and installed it quickly. In the first week, I got the knack of the device’s workings and soon was using it like a pro. A feeling of security like nothing I have ever felt suffused my soul and made its home in my bosom.

No longer would I be hassled by the man! No longer would I pay the fines that I so clearly owe to society! Viva La Revolucion!

Is The Use Of Radar Detectors Legal?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

The legal use of radar detectors in motor vehicles is  regulated by national rules all over the world. Variations are nearly endless from the total legality till the prohibition of having it.

Seeing the question from both sides – a) why are police using radar traps? To catch speeders is only ONE aspect – since they never stand where it’s really dangerous – so the actual aspect is- making money off motorist in a hurry. Now – lets be fair – they will catch the notorious speeder that really dives dangerousely fast (for himself and others) out of a habit – but I’d say it’s rather the exception than the rule.

The cause of the regulations is understandable- they want to leave the motorists defenseless – at their mercy – and they want to get your money! Why do motorists use radar detector? In their moving on any type of streets, or highways, motorists use radar and laser detectors to perceive the radar signal of the highway patrols/policemen. The alert of the detectors helps motorists to decelerate the vehicles and avoid penalty (heavy fines, ticket, suspension of driver’s license, etc. as is regulated by the law in the country).
do radar detectors really work, radar detectors states legal

Between the unregulated free use and the total prohibition there are interesting variations in the United States and in Canada. (We review the situation in Europe and in Asia in another article.)

Driving in the United States

In the United States, the law varies from state to state, and there is a distinction of the use in private vehicles and in commercial ones. Referring back to the Communications Act of 1934, detectors are generally legal in private vehicles and illegal in all commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs under US federal law.

escort 9500xi radar detectors, which states prohibit radar detectors

To see some exceptions: the legal use was repealed in Connecticut in 1998, and radar detectors are illegal in Virginia, Washington D.C. and in the U.S. military bases. Referring to "obstructing vision", radar detector is indirectly illegal in Minnesota, California and New York. Confiscation of the detector was once a common practice.

Radar Detectors in Canada

radar detectors states legal, list of states radar detectors are illegal, top of the line radar detectors
Driving through Canada from North to South or from East to West with a radar detector in a car is a dangerous task.

The states have different restrictions, so its use is legal in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Regardless of whether they are used or not, police confiscate the device and impose heavy fines in countries where radar detector is illegal, that is, in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northern Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and in the Yukon Territory.

cheap radar detectors, compare radar detectors, buy radar detectors
The regulations may suddenly change so before you start a trip to the neighbor state in the United States or organize your trip across different states of Canada, it is advised to do due diligence and collect official information.

Radar Detectors-To Beat Photo Radars- Needs Cunning Steps

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

A photo radar is designed to photograph drivers who travel five to ten miles per hour over the speed limit. These photographs, along with particulars such as date, time, location, and vehicle speed, are then mailed to offenders.

Anatomy of Photo Radars
How does photo radar work? Photo radar is made up of the following:

– a high speed traffic camera and flash unit
– a narrow beam, low-powered Doppler radar antenna aimed across the road
– a computer that records information, such as date, time, speed, and location of the violation

Photo radar works this way. First, the system is hoisted onto a police vehicle that typically patrols areas where overspeeding is a problem. Then, it catches speed demons and those who run against red lights. Drivers can see their vehicles’ speed from a reader board found in the back window of the police unit display.

Beating Photo Radars
Many disgruntled drivers have successfully parlayed their dislike for photo radars into a lucrative business. They produce products that supposedly protect drivers from being photographed by photo radars. Below are some of the products and a brief description of how they are used.

Radar Detectors
A radar detector detects the presence of photo enforcement devices. Accordingly, it assists drivers in beating photo radars by warning them of photo radar presence. This gives drivers time to slow down. Many claim radar detectors are effective. One problem with radar detectors, however, is that these do not work with red light cameras that measure speed using sensors embedded in roadways.

Flash-back device
What senses the flash of a photo enforcement camera and immediately flashes its own strobe light onto the license plate to make license numbers invisible to cameras? Why, a flash-back device, of course! Flash-back devices are highly popular, especially because they’re cheap. A study, shows however, that flash-back devices are ineffective in beating photo radars when Redflex sensor-based photo enforcement cameras are used.

GPS-based warning systems
Radar detectors are illegal, and in some states, use of flash-back devices are implicitly prohibited. What do drivers interested in beating photo radars without breaking the law do? They buy GPS-based warning systems. These devices, which are very popular in European markets, has just recently become available in the United States.

This is how a GPS-based warning system works: you download the location of speed enforcement cameras into a GPS system. Because your system now has a map of camera locations, it warns you to slow down every time you are close to a photo radar.

While a GPS-based technology may seem infallible, it is not without its faults. To be effective, it relies on your knowledge of photo radars’ locations. This is knowledge you may not always have. All it takes for you to get a citation is one speed camera unregistered in your GPS system.

car radar detectors, how do radar detectors work, cheap radar detectors, do radar detectors really work
Plate covers
Plate covers are cheaper alternatives to the three technologies I have previously discussed. These covers go over your license plate, keeping it visible to anyone who is directly behind your car. In certain angles, however, a portion of your license plate cannot be seen. Some states, particularly Washington, D.C, penalize the use of these covers by as much as $300. Other states are silent regarding their use. Should you ever decide to go for plate covers, note that they do not work with motion video cameras.

Photo spray
This is the least effective method for beating photo radars. It is sprayed onto license plates.

top rated radar detectors, escort 9500xi radar detectorsIts high gloss finish is said to reflect the light flashed by cameras, resulting in overexposure of photos. Experts warn that photo sprays are only 45% reliable in reflecting camera light. Furthermore, though photos are overexposed, a quick scrutiny of their negatives will yield the exact sequence of a license plate’s numbers and letters. , on radar detectors, list of states radar detectors are illegal

Beating photo radars requires cunning and the proper tools.

What’s The Fuss About Intelligent Laser Detectors?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Most of us realize that speed limits are set for our safety and understand the risks of traveling at a high rate of speed. On long trips you might find yourself "keeping up with traffic" and when you look at your speedometer, you realize that you are going over the actual speed limit.

This might be a nice time to have had a car radar detector to allow you time to slow down before being "busted." In today’s world, the best bet might be the laser detector for detecting the best radar equipment being used by the law enforcement officers.
After that first ticket, or maybe after numerous tickets, you may begin to understand why there is so much "fuss" about these devices. This is where you will need time, patience, and information to make sure that you get the most up-to-date radar detector at the right price for you. The older radar detectors worked by using radio waves to detect the speed that the motorist was traveling.

Older radar detectors worked by using radio waves to detect the speed that the motorist was traveling. The laser guns are more precise and actually, harder to detect by a "fuzz buster." When researching which type of detectors works best, the Valentine One Radar seems to be one of the most promising on the market today, when it comes to the best radar detector available. One reason why it is so impressive is that it never goes out of date because it can always be sent back to Valentine for the newest updates.

The laser detector they are selling today is actually the same one that they sold several years ago; they just keep updating the technology.
What you purchase really does depend on what you are looking for in a radar detector. Another name that is very popular for value and dependability is the Whistler radar detector. It detects not only the radio waves but the laser beams that are used by law enforcement officers when determining your speed.

Although most of us are typically law abiding citizens, this is the one law that most every driver breaks at some time or another. Whether it is intentional or not, it only takes being caught that one time by a law enforcement officer to get a ticket. And although the laws are in place for everyone’s safety, it is hard to swallow when you get a citation and nobody was hurt or you really were unaware of your speed.

being caught at speeding, avoid speeding tickets
So, the best advice for the safety of yourself and everyone on the interstate, side streets, or roads that you are traveling on is to just slow down and leave early enough to get where you are going without the need to speed. However, if you are prone to rushing here and there, especially when traveling great distances and you want to avoid speeding tickets, then do your research and find the best laser detector for your needs and budget.

Radar Detector- Why I Should Have Got One Much Earlier!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I remember it well! I was on a fast stretch of road, but keeping to the limit for that stretch. I came towards a village, where the speed limit dropped by 20mph. Obviously I slowed down, and continued to slow. The road curved round to the left and went downhill. All this within about 100 yards of the slow down sign. And guess who was waiting for me at the bottom of the bend? Yes, you guessed it, the boys in blue.

I was fined for being 4mph over the limit! Grr. It didn’t seem right then, and it doesn’t seem right now either. So was there anything I could have done to avoid this in justice?

Radar detectors are extremely effective for warning drivers that they are approaching a speed detection device that uses a radar system. The speed is calculated using the difference between the transmit frequency and receive frequency (also known as the Doppler shift). They are essentially microwave radio receivers, and as such, it is important that the detector you want can identify the radio waves emitted by the equipment used by the authorities.

Radar detectors come essentially in two flavours, corded or uncorded. The corded typically mounts to your windshield, and because of its location offers an aerial less-obstructed detection. Cordless is as the name suggests, and offers you portable convenience to have the unit located where you want. This also means that you can use the unit for different vehicles without having to resort to multiple units or fiddly removals or re-installs.

There are some important considerations when shopping for radar detectors. These include band detection, which allow a range of police radar devices to be detected, distance of detection, ability to send a jamming signal, and, of course, price. In addition to these concerns, anyone interested in purchasing a motorcycle radar detector should check that the detector comes with an ear jack, because you will have to rely on an aural signal for these devices to be effective for you.

Some radar detectors can be extremely expensive but finding a discount unit is relatively simple if you know where to look. One option for purchasing radar detectors cheaply is to search for wholesale electronic distributors who have their own retail outlets. You will need to ascertain from the manufacturer that the detector that you are trying to buy will work in your area, or has band detection available. The stockist should have information about the frequencies used by your local authorities as well, so try and find this out before you part with any hard earned cash. Bear in mind that the cost of a radar detector is far less than the cost of the speeding tickets that you may face – so or protect yourself, get a radar detector.
avoid speeding tickets, traffic tickets
Used radar detectors prices are reasonable and sometimes negotiable. They can be purchased from owners, dealers, or from superstores. Try to buy used radar detectors directly from the owners if possible, as you are likely to get a better deal. In the case of superstores, used radar detector prices are not normally negotiable, though they are usually sold for a reasonable, predetermined price. However, it sometimes pays to ask for a cash deal and to have cash ready, just in case! Such companies recondition the units to sell as refurbished items. A specialty of refurbished radar detectors is that their prices are remarkably low and they provide the same benefit that a new radar detector offers.

A radar detector can be purchased via the Internet too, however, a local car audio store should be able to inform you of state laws that might limit purchasing options.
exceeding speeding limit, traffic court
The road is an ever more difficult place to avoid speeding tickets. You need radar detectors to find the sneaky cops who hide behind road signs, in bushes, up trees. http://www.nomoreradar.com/radar/
